Pitcairn fights back against allegation that it is “top spammer”

In a recent report from Sophos, it is alleged that Pitcairn relays the most spam per head of population.

However, when questioned by Bill Haigh, Pitcairn’s ISP and administrator of Pitcairn’s Internet top-level domain, Sophos’s senior security consultant, Carole Theriault was unable to say how they obtain their figures for spam emanating from Pitcairn, or even produce a single example of a spam email that they know has come from the island.

“The geographical source of Internet hosts is determined by IP address, however Pitcairn’s Internet access is provided by a point-to-point satellite link with another country, and so it is not possible to determine that spam is being emitted from the island”, says Haigh.

“For example, try going to http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/ip_ranges/get_ranges.php and select “Pitcairn” from the drop down box. How many IP addresses do you get? None!

What I suspect they have done is to make the erroneous assumption that every country has at least one compromised machine”, he continues. “In that case, their flawed methodology would show that one in fifty of Pitcairn’s population relays spam. However, due to the narrow bandwidth of Pitcairn’s satellite link, even a single infected machine would quickly clog up the link. Pitcairners have known this for some time and take all measures necessary to keep their machines clean. Rather than Pitcairn being the world’s worst spammer, I would say it relays the least! i.e. NONE! Sophos got this completely wrong and owes Pitcairn an apology” he said.
